Bermuda: Maintenance and inspection of fixed CO2 fire extinguishing systems

The Bermuda Shipping and Maritime Authority has published a merchant shipping notice for the maintenance and inspection of fixed carbon dioxide fire extinguishing systems.

The notice was issued on 27th March 2023 and it applies to classification societies, ship owners, managers, masters, and officers of Bermuda-registered ships.

This notice reproduces the guidance contained in IMO MSC1./Circ.1318/Rev.1 for the maintenance and inspection of fixed Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems with additional guidance applicable to Bermuda-flagged ships. It also provides general guidance for the application of this IMO Circular. Maintenance, testing, and inspections shall be carried out based on the guidelines developed by the organization (MSC.1/Circ 1318/Rev.1) and in a manner having due regard to ensuring the reliability of fire-fighting systems and appliances.

Although the MSC/Circular 1318/Rev.1 guidelines are not mandatory, the Bermuda Shipping and Maritime Administration will accept them when inspecting fixed CO2 systems on Bermuda-flagged vessels subject to the guidance provided in this shipping notice being complied with.

The notice details how to carry out monthly, annual, and full-service inspections. There is an appendix with sample service charts in the document.
