DNV has updated the offshore standards for automation, safety, and telecommunication systems

Classification Society DNV has updated its offshore standards for automation, safety, and telecommunication systems.

This offshore standard document (DNV-OS-D202), was published on 1 July 2023 and supersedes the July 2019 edition of DNVGL-OS-D202.

This standard aims to:

  • Establish internationally acceptable safety, automation, and telecommunication system requirements for design, materials, fabrication, installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and abandonment of offshore units.
  • Serve as a technical reference document for contractual matters between purchasers and contractors and as a guideline for designers.
  • Specify procedures and requirements for offshore units subject to DNV certification and classification.

The standard covers safety, automation, and telecommunication systems and applies to other systems impacting main function safety as per DNV-OS-A101.

It complies with MODU code regulations regarding safety, automation, and telecommunication systems.

For telecommunication, relevant sections are found in DNV-OS-A101 Ch.2 Sec.5 [6].

The standard targets mobile offshore units and floating offshore installations of specific design types but can be applied to other floating constructions and fixed offshore installations.

It has worldwide applicability, and governmental regulations may impose additional requirements based on unit size, type, location, and intended service.

For offshore classification, DNV rules for classification of offshore units (DNV-RU-OU) should be consulted.

An optional notation (ES) may extend the classification scope with enforced sections or requirements.

The standard is based on internationally accepted principal requirements listed in Table 2, with added Society interpretations for uniform application.

These interpretations aim to fulfill the principal requirements and allow other alternative solutions if they comply with the original interpretation.
