Isle of Man issues notice on Garbage Record Books requirements for ships under 400gt

The Isle of Man Ship Registry published the Technical Advisory Notice TAN 001-24 regarding Garbage Record Books for ships under 400gt.

This advisory notice was published on 2 April 2024.

Introduction

This notice applies to operators of all ships, including pleasure vessels, that are between 100gt and 399gt and engaged on international voyages. From 1st May 2024, such ships will be required to maintain a Garbage Record Book in accordance with Regulation 10 of MARPOL Annex V.

It should be noted that some vessels within this tonnage range may already be required to maintain a Garbage Record Book if they are certified to carry more than 15 persons and are engaged on international voyages.

Additionally, the Garbage Record Book is divided into two parts. Part I is applicable to all ships referenced above, and Part II is only applicable to ships which carry solid bulk cargoes.

Garbage Record Book

The Ship Registry does not produce Garbage Record Books; therefore, ships may use any record book that conforms with the format prescribed by IMO (see Appendix II to MARPOL Annex V).

Electronic log books can also be used instead of paper log books, but if doing so, these must be approved in accordance with TAN 008-20.

The information to be recorded within the log book is stated in MARPOL Annex V Regulation 10, with further guidance in Appendix II.

Completed record books must be preserved for a period of at least two years from the date of the last entry made in it.
