Isle of Man updates the list of persons qualified to own a Manx ship

The Isle of Man Ship Registry has issued an updated Registry Advice Note (RAN) regarding persons and organisations qualified to own a Manx ship under Section 2 of the Merchant Shipping Registration Act 1991.

This document was published on December 5th, 2022.

The following individuals are qualified to own a Manx ship:

  • British Citizens;
  • British Overseas Territory Citizens;
  • British Overseas Citizens;
  • British Subjects;
  • British Nationals (Overseas); or
  • A citizen of any of the countries listed in Schedule 1

Bodies Corporate incorporated in any of the following countries and having their principal place of business in any of the following countries are qualified as well:

  • The Isle of Man;
  • The United Kingdom;
  • The Channel Islands; or
  • Any of the countries listed in Schedule 1.

Also, in order to qualify, limited partnerships must have their principal place of business in:

  • The Isle of Man;
  • The United Kingdom;
  • The Channel Islands; or
  • Any of the countries listed in Schedule 1

List of countries in Schedule 1:

European Union:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands

European Economic Area:

Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway

British Overseas Territories:

Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Caymans Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, St Helena, Ascension and Tristan Da Cunha, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, Sovereign base areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Turks and Caicos Islands

Other countries:  

Australia, Bahamas, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Liberia, Marshall Islands, Monaco, New Zealand, Pakistan, Panama, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United States of America

Additionally, limited partnerships need to be registered in any of the countries listed in paragraph 2, and have a general partner which is:

1) an individual resident in any of the countries listed in paragraph 2;

2) or a body corporate incorporated and which has its principal place of business in any of the countries listed in paragraph 2.

  • The Isle of Man;
  • Belgium;
  • Bermuda;
  • The Cayman Islands;
  • Denmark;
  • Germany;
  • Malta;
  • Norway;
  • Sweden;
  • The Netherlands; or
  • The United Kingdom.
