Panama will sanction vessels that deactivate LRIT or AIS

The Panama Maritime Authority has issued a marine notice about the sanction to all vessels of the Panamanian Registry that deliberately deactivate the Long Range Identification and Tracking Equipment (LRIT) or the Automatic Identification System (AIS).

The notice was published on March 1st, 2023.

The Panamanian General Directorate of Merchant Marine monitors all Panamanian vessels 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If LRIT or AIS is not working or reporting, an automatic alert will be sent to Navigation and Maritime Safety Department (Fleet Control and Tracking Department). After that, an internal investigation of such an alert will be initiated. If it is determined that there is no justified absence of a report, sanctions are possible. Also, if it is found that the vessel often behaves in such a way, its flag can be removed or it can be deleted from the register.
