Portuguese Maritime Administration warns about the malfunction of the GPS equipment

Portuguese Maritime Administration, on April 4th, 2023, issued a circular warning about the malfunction of the GPS equipment.

The purpose of this document is to warn of a malfunction that GPS may have that may generate errors in its position, affecting LRIT reporting.

It has been reported to the Portuguese national LRIT that since March 26th, 00:00 UTC, there has been a significant reduction in the number of LRIT position reports being processed by the EU LRIT CDC, due to a bug in the older Mini-C equipment.

A problem was identified in the terminal software (GPS rollover) for terminals that ended their life 10 years ago and are no longer supported by the manufacturer.

The only solution to this problem is to replace the terminal.

This circular is addressed to ship owners, companies, operators, recognized organizations, shore-based maintenance entities, surveyors, masters, and skippers of Portuguese-flagged vessels.
