Suez Canal issued a circular intended for containerships heading to Asia

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has issued a circular concerning “Containerships” (laden/ballast) directly coming from ports in “North-West Europe” and directly heading to (Port Klang) port and its Eastern ports in the “Far East”.

This circular (8/2023) was issued on 13 October 2023 and will be effective from 15 January 2024 until 30 June 2024.

Containerships traveling directly from ports in North-West Europe, including Tangier port, departing from Algeciras port and heading straight to Port Klang and its Eastern ports in South-East Asia and the Far East, are exempt from the 15% increase in standard transit fees outlined in paragraph (a) of Circular (7/2023).

Conditions for Applying the Circular:

1. Companies seeking this exemption must request it through their shipping agency before the vessel departs, providing vessel details, ports, ETA, and cargo info.
2. The vessel must not make commercial stops at intermediate ports. If it does, a certificate explaining the stop's purpose is required.
3. Documents for exemption approval must be submitted within one year from the vessel's transit.
4. The shipping agency must pledge to pay the exemption amount if the vessel violates any of the circular's conditions.
