This MIN 653 (M) was published on 13 February 2024.

The MIN encompasses a broad spectrum of officer roles, including Officers in charge of a Navigational Watch (OOW), Chief Mates, and Masters, catering to vessels of diverse tonnages and engagement in Near-Coastal Voyages. Each syllabus is meticulously outlined, providing clarity on the knowledge and skills required to excel in the respective capacities. From the intricate responsibilities of OOW officers overseeing ships exceeding 500 Gross Tonnage (GT) to the nuanced requirements for Chief Mates and Masters navigating vessels of varying sizes, this document leaves no stone unturned.

Furthermore, the MIN extends its coverage to include the oral exam syllabi specific to Chief Mate candidates managing ships under 3000 GT, as well as OOW officers and Masters operating vessels under 500 GT engaged in Near-Coastal Voyages. By addressing the unique challenges and competencies associated with each role and vessel category, the MIN aims to equip aspiring deck officers with the requisite knowledge and preparation for successful examination outcomes.

Feedback on the MIN is highly encouraged, and stakeholders are invited to submit their insights and suggestions to exams@mcga.gov.uk. This collaborative approach ensures continuous improvement and refinement of the certification process, ultimately fostering a safer and more competent maritime workforce.
