The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has issued amendments to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk (IBC Code), adopted at the latest MEPC session that was held from 6th to 10th of June 2022.
The Committee adopted Resolution MEPC.345(78) containing amendments to Chapter 2 of the IBC Code. Similar to the amendments of MARPOL Annex I, it addresses watertight doors. The Convention requires that the final waterline after flooding is not above the lower edge of any opening through which progressive flooding or downflooding may take place. The openings included in this requirement are the same as before but it expands on the openings that may be excluded, meaning that the waterline may exceed the lower edge of the mentioned openings.
The amendments will enter into force on 01 July 2024.
