The Chemical Distribution Institute has published a "best practice" document about the use of portable electronic equipment on board tankers.
The scope of this document published on 31 January 2023 is to ensure compliance with recognized standards.
The carriage and use of portable electronic equipment should always be in accordance with the regulations.
Additionally, portable electronic equipment carried or used on tankers or at facilities must be operated safely and effectively.
A thorough risk assessment should be conducted, considering the hazardous certification of the equipment and ensuring its suitability for the intended area of use.
Ship crews should be made aware of the classification of hazardous areas and understand the proper carriage, operation, and restricted usage of portable electronic equipment.
The "risk assessment before use" should also address any discrepancies between current regulations and the compatibility of modern portable electronic devices.
It is important to strictly use portable electronic equipment certified for hazardous areas.
It should be noted that this document does not override any restrictions or limitations imposed by national or local regulations, competent authorities, certification entities, classification organizations, or a company's Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) or Safety Management System (SMS).
