Korean Register (KR) on 18 and 19 September 2023 published articles informing about the amendments to KR Technical Rules for pollution from ships, and steel castings.
Pollution from Ships
Amendments to the KR Technical Rules are made in the Guidance for Prevention Systems of Pollution from Ships and are applicable from 1 January 2024 (the date of contract for ship construction or the application date for survey).
Amendments:
UR M77 (Rev. 4) & UR M81 (Rev. 1) to reflect the result of the internal review
- Adding the requirement about the arrangement of Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems
- Updating the requirements for the Onboard carbon capture and storage system
- Others
These amendments will be included in the 2023 edition of Rules and Guidance on KR Classification Technical Rules which is provided on the website after the effective/implementation date.

Steel Castings
Also, Amendments to the KR Technical Rules are made in Part 2 of the Rules: Test block size of steel castings, to reserve reflection of 6.3 & 6.4 of IACS UR W8 (Rev. 3 Mar 2022).
These amendments are applicable retroactively after 1 July 2023 and will be included in the 2024 edition of KR Classification Technical Rules which will be published in the first half of 2024.
