PRS issues guidelines for fire safety inspections on sea-going ships

The Polish Register of Shipping (PRS) has released amended guidelines for periodic inspections of fire-extinguishing systems and appliances used on ships.

The guidelines were published on 1 May 2024.

This publication outlines inspection guidelines for fire divisions, escape routes, fire-extinguishing systems, and additional fire hazard equipment on sea-going ships. The intervals and scope of these inspections should adhere to the requirements detailed in Part I of the Classification Regulations of the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-going Ships.

It details a range of activities to be undertaken, including inspections, tests, and examinations tailored to different types of systems and equipment. These activities encompass diverse areas such as fire divisions, water fire main systems, automatic sprinkler systems, water-spraying fire-extinguishing systems, foam fire-extinguishing systems, carbon dioxide fire-extinguishing systems, gas fire-extinguishing systems, aerosol fire-extinguishing systems, powder fire-extinguishing systems, and more.

Additionally, the document includes references to relevant IMO documents and incorporates updates and revisions to specific guidelines.

Through these inspections and tests, the document ensures that the ship's fire protection systems comply with regulations and are prepared for use in the event of a fire emergency.
