The Panama Canal Authority has issued advisory No. A-29-2024, dated August 23, 2024, announcing that the existing customer ranking calculation method will remain unchanged until December 31, 2025. This decision addresses concerns raised by customers about the new Long-Term Slot Allocation (LoTSA) methodology, which is set to begin on September 2, 2024.
Customers had expressed the need for clarity on how the new ranking rules would affect them before they fully engage with the new LoTSA system. In response, the Authority will continue using the current ranking system for slot allocations during booking periods while it assesses potential updates to the ranking criteria.
The Canal Authority will review the factors that could influence customer rankings and will communicate any new criteria well in advance. This allows customers adequate time to understand and prepare for any impacts on their operations.
